HILLMAN'S AIRWAYS EXPANDING.

ONJune 19, Hillman's Airways, Ltd., opened a new service between London and Brussels and on June 20 started its accelerated service between London and Paris. For the latter service, de Havilland 86 four-engined liners are being used and the first of these was named on June 20 by Lady Cunliffe-Lister, the wife of the Secretary of State for Air, before it started an the regular service, Three machines if this type will be employed exclusively for the Paris service.

The new London—Bcussels service will run three times each way daily, with an intermediate call at Ostend. Departures am at-9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. from the King's Cross Coach Station, and the machines leave Essex Airport an hour later, being due to reach Ostend in 75 minutes and Brussels in 2 hours.

The company intends to start a service between -Ramsgate and Belgium so soon as the Ramsgate municipal aerodrome is ready for use.

Hillman's Airways, 'Ltd., holds the Post Office contract for carrying mails on the London — Belfast — Glasgow route. The company is now carrying about 1,000 lb. of mail a day, about half of which is between London and Northern Ireland, the remainder being mail for Northern England and handled at Liverpool.

CROSS-COUNTRY NETWORK

EXTENDING.

NEW services, linking Blackpool, Liverpool, Yeadon (which serves Bradford and Leeds) and Morecambe, were, as foreshadowed in The Commercial Motor on June 14, inaugurated by United Airways, Ltd., on June 18. At the same time the service from Blackpool to the Isle of Man was increased.

During a luncheon, at Blackpool, which followed the inauguration of the services, Aid. T. Waite, J.P., Mayor of Morecambe, announced that Lancaster and Morecambe were negotiating for an aerodrome to serve both towns, AMBITIOUS PROGRAMME OF AIR TOURS.

THEair-travel department of Thomas HE and Son, Ltd., has produced an interesting booklet concerning air services and tours for this summer. Without attempting to give the timetables, which are aVailable in the Bradshaw Guide, the brochure presents brief and useful notes on the air services in Great Britain, as well as on the Continental, Imperial and Atlantic connections, The company is specializing in air tours this year and is offering an eightday cruise of Great Britain by an Imperial Airways twin-engined aero

plane of the Boulton Paul P.71A type for 46i guineas each person. Departures are scheduled for June 22, July 6 and 20, and August 3, and the itinerary includes London, Plymouth, Bristol, Leamiagton, Belfast, Edinburgh, Leeds and Cambridge.

There are inclusive holidays by air abroad—for instance, four days in ' Amsterdam for 210 15s., or five days in Paris for 210 5s.; also air cruises around Europe at 238 10s. for seven days, and 261 for 12 days, with visits to five or seven different countries.

RAMSGATE'S BID FOR AIR TRAFFIC.

THE new municipal aerodrome at Ramsgate, within 1k mile of the sea front, will shortly be ready for use. The airport, which has cost in the

neighbourhood of 220,000, has been leased by the corporation to Mr, Whitney Straight, who is forming an operating company, with the provision that daily services must be run between London and Ramsgate during July, August and September.

The corporation is also negotiating with a view to using the harbour as a seaplane base in conjunction with the airport.

NEW PLYMOUTH—JERSEY ROUTE.

A NEW air service between Plyrtmouth and St. Helier, Jersey, will be inaugurated td-day (Friday). The service is to be Operated on Mondays• and Fridays, making a journey each way in the day. The service is being run by Whoopee Sports .(West Country), Ltd., Plymouth.

AIRCRAFT MAKER BUYS SHE RBURN AERODROME.

I T is understood that Mr. Robert Blackburn, head of the Blackburn

aircraft manufacturing concern, Brough, neax Hull, has purchased the Sherburn aerodrome'. Preliminary plans have been drawn up far the erection of' a new hangar and a new club-house of modern design.

I.F.S. NATIONAL AIR SERVICES.

I N the Irish Free State Parliament, last week, Mr. Sean Lemass, Minister for Industry and Commerce, announced that an experimental regular air service between Great Britain and the Irish Free State would probably be started next month and continued through the winter, to obtain technical information before opening a permanent service between the I.F.S., Great Britain and Continental countries. It is hoped, next year, to have a national air service firmly established.

NEW SERVICE TO LE TOUQUET.

DtrRING the summer, Commercial Air Hire, Ltd., is, from to-day, operating week-end services from Croydon to Le Touquet, using the 16-passenger twin-esgined Avro 642 illustrated in the issue of The Congmercial Motor, dated June 7. The machine carries a buffet, and refreshments will be served in the air. Pass;Pt_gers are picked up at the Victoria Coach Station, London. The fares are 23 15s. Single and 26 return. Booking arrangements are In the hands of Air Dispatch, Ltd.

WEEK.

BUSINESS transacted by our principal maker of civil aeroplanes, the de Havilland Aircraft Co., Ltd., is a good indication of the advance of air transport. During a recent week, the company sold no fewer than 18 new aeroplanes, as well as 19 extra Gipsy engines. The aeroplanes are for England, Canada, France, Spain, etc.
