In referring, in our issue for last week, to the visit of Mr. J. A. Lyons, Premier of Australia, to the Albion works, Mr. Wm. F. Kennedy was mentioned as chairman of the Clyde Navigation Trustees; it should have read Mr. Wm. F. Robertson.

• Owing to ill-health, Mr. James Leavesley has resigned his position as chairman of the Blackpool and District Road Haulage Association, and from the North Western Area Joint Conciliation Board and the Commercial Motor Users Association executive. The chairmanship of the Blackpool Association has not yet been filled.

The newly appointed national organiier to the Commercial Motor Users Association, Mr. J. Kinder, is a Manchester man who has achieved cOnsidetable success in a similar capacity in that area during the past two or three years. He has been largely responsible for a considerable growth of membership consequent upon his success in the establishment of numerous new branches within the Manchester and Liverpool areas.

Mr. James Paterson, of Carter, Paterson and Co., Ltd., has consented to act as appeal president for 135-36 of the General Porters' Benevolent Association, 19-23, Ludgate Hill, London, E.C.4. This Association, like many others, has suffered during recent years, and Mr. Paterson hopes that, with the practical sympathy and support of all trades, its excellent wo,t will be fully maintained, The object of the Association is to assist permanently disabled porters, packers, messengers and their dependents.

Owing to the withdrawal from the London area of the F. G. Smith's enterprise—Smith's Commercial Vehicles, Ltd.—Mr. K. R. Holditch, M.I.M.T., A.I.A.E. (Aust,), who for many years has been associated with the commercial-vehicle industry both at home and overseas, has severed his connection with the company, which, in future, will carry out its activities from Goodmayes.

Mr. HoIditch will be remembered in connection with his introduction of Gifford vehicles into Australia and his earlier successes in establishing Vulcan vehicles on the New Zealand market. Is• was born in 1896 and served during the whole of the war. His subsequent career included the operation of a bus service in New Zealand and a post in the technical sales department of the Michelin Tyre Co., Ltd.

" Gentleman's Agreement " on Rates.

When there was an objection lodged on the score of rate-cutting against an application at a hearing by Sir W. E. Hart (Deputy Licensing Authority, North-Western area) at Welshpool on Tuesday last, it was stated by Mr. Charles H. Parrish (secretary of the c22 Montgomeryshire Bus and Road Haulage Association) that there was a " gentleman's agreement" on the question of rates locally. Sir William adjourned the application, suggesting that the applicant should consult the Association in the meantime so that the position should be clarified. It is important, he said, that reasonable rates should be maintained.

The report of the Sentinel Waggon Works, Ltd., for the year ended December 31, 1934, shows a loss OR trading, after meeting interest, directors' fees, etc., of £38,623, to which must be added the balance brought forward from the previous year, making a total of £83,723. A sum of £8,570 has been provided for depreciation, whilst £2,028 has been applied in writing off patents and £5,553 in experimental and development expenditure, so that the total debit balance to be carried forward amounts to £99,874: .

In a • circular accompanying the report, it is mentioned that the recent trend of legislation against heavy road vehicles has had an extremely adverse effect upon the company's business. It is also mentioned that negotiations are in progress with a view to the reconstruction of the company, involving the provision of additional finance, and encouraging progress in this direction has already been made.

Haulier's Licence Revoked with Costs.

Allowing appeals by the London, Midland and Scottish and London and North Eastern Raillvay companies, at Harrogate, the Appeal Tribunal made an award to the L.M.S. of £2 115.

The appeal was against a decision of the Yorkshire Deputy Licensing Authority to grant an A licence to Mr. W. H. Palmer, Barnsley. It was explained that Mr. Palmer was working for a colliery company. • The Tribunal upheld the' contention of the appellants that an A licence was unnecessary for this work.
