Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

of the Freight Transport Association, has warned that the industry is going to face stiff competition from cut-price foreign operators in the wake of the government's cancellation of its Lorry Road User Charging project.

His comments follow meetings with treasury minister John Healey to discuss the cancellation.

Turner says Healey apologised for the fact that the government was no longer proceeding with LRUC, but remains convinced that it was the right decision to cancel it.

"We suggested a whole range of ways to achieve what we wanted as a temporary measure until we get the full [road charging] scheme," he adds. "But he was just not interested in talking about them he wasn't convinced that the government needed to take any action.

"I feel that the industry, particularly that part of the industry that is affected markedly by cheap competition, has yet to see the full consequences of the government's decision."

Turner predicts that operators on domestic work will be affected, as well as those in the international sector.

The FTA is now formulating a joint strategy on this subject with the Road Haulage Association. dominic.perry@rbi.co.uk
