one-day strikes at Kentbased SCA Transport after management imposed a 5% pay increase.

SCA says the increase, which is backdated to January, is much bigger than most comparable operators have awarded this year.

But Billy Lamb, Transport & General Workers Union regional industrial organiser, says the rise still leaves the drivers more than C3-an-hour short of the union's 210 benchmark: "We were looking for an increase in line with the Working Time Directive, In the near future the drivers will probably not be able to do the hours they have been doing."

He believes accepting the increase would set an unacceptable precedent: "Why should they [the company] sit down with us again if drivers had accepted an imposed increase?"

The stoppages are scheduled for 8, 15,22 and 30 August.

SCA Transport MD Doug Pulham says there is absolutely no more money available: "It is an increase that is far in excess for most in the logistics industry and the paper and packaging sector which is mainly where we work."

He adds that the company employs about 165 drivers, of which 129 are in the T&G: "Only 103 voted and only 67 voted for strike action."

Pulham says the transport arm of Swedish-based SCA has been operating in the UK for more than 50 years and this will be its first industrial dispute: "Our relationship with the union thus far has been excellent as far as we are concerned."
