While Volvo's latest FH cab looks different, from the workshop point of view it's the changes beneath it that are of greater interest. The 12-litre engine now comes equipped with electronically controlled unit injectors driven by an overhead camshaft. This also operates four valves per cylinder and can incorporate Volvo's engine brake (VEB).

To find out the servicing requirements of the FH12 we visited the font of all knowledge on things Volvo, its training centre at Warwick. Instructor Julian Jones pointed out where difficulties can arise in servicing the FH12 using a new vehicle and a stand mounted engine in one of the workshops.

We took a look at the most powerful 12 litre version, a 420hp 4x2 tractive unit equipped with Volvo's engine braking system and an air-suspended rear axle. With the electronic engine comes a diagnostic button with flash codes (hidden in the centre console) and a computer links capability for the engine and ABS systems.

Workshop manuals containing all procedures, torques and fault codes for Volvo vehicles are available from the dealers. Fleet fitters can also attend courses at Warwick.
