Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Noel Millier • Mercedes-Benz' has launched the Urbanranger, a competitively priced midrange single-deck bus designed to fill a niche between the "super midibus" and the high specification 12m city bus.

Urbanranger uses the relatively unsophisticated 0H1416 chassis built at Worth in Germany, adapted to meet British requirements for the first time.

All chassis are bodied by Northern Ireland-based Robert Wright using its Alusuisse body system. Provision is made for 72 passengers with 47 seated. The 11.5m-long vehicle has a 330mm wide entrance with three steps up to the passenger deck.

The chassis is a conventional low-bed ladder type steel chassis with riveted cross members. Long leaf steel suspension is designed to give a ride quality comparable to air suspension.

Power comes from a rear mounted in-line six-cylinder Mercedes OM 366A turbocharged diesel producing 163hp (121kW) at 2,600rpm and 3981bft (540Nm) of torque between 1,400rpm and 1,70Orpm.

Standard gearbox is the Allison MT643 four-speed automatic, while the Allison World Series B300R five-speed automatic with built-in retarder is available as an option for the first time in a UK PCV at £5,000. Manual transmission can be specified at a cost saving of £5,700.

A feature of the body is easy to remove quick repair side panels. Seats are Callow and Maddox Urban 7s trimmed with moquette.

A luggage pen is fitted at the front nearside of the passenger compartment. Other equipment includes fully glazed powered entrance doors, front destination and route number blinds and standard sized tinted windows. Body parts are common with the Wright Endurance range. This is already available with Mercedes high specification 0405 bus range.

Both Mercedes-Benz and Wright will market the Urbanranger while Mercedes truck dealers offer contract maintenance and part service. Price is £84,000 (ex-VAT).

LI Leeds based Optare has reached agreement with Mercedes-Benz to build its 12m single-decker bus on the Mercedes 0405 Citybus chassis.

Both companies will market the bus which will incorporate Mercedes own bus front end.
