Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Tatra company of Prague has produced efficient diesel and petrol engines of the air-cooled type for lorries and cars for more years than younger engineers can remember. And in 1961 CM reviewed Air-Cooled Motor Engines by Julius Mackerle, of the Research Institute of Motor Vehicles, Prague, who was formerly chief designer at the Tatra works, and the book was claimed to be the most notable survey of air cooling that had been prepared.

A revised and enlarged second edition of the book was published in April of this year by Charles Griffin and Co Ltd, 42 Drury Lane, London WC2, at £8, under the title Air-Cooled Automotive Engines. Mr Mackerle is still a member of the Prague Research Institute and may be regarded as one ofrthe top authorities in the world on air cooling. New chapters give details of Wankel engines and of methods of reducing noise levels. The survey of well-known engine makes and types provides up-to-date information on current models from motorcycle petrol engines to high-output

industrial diesels and includes units fm commercial vehicles and cars. And as before, the chapters on theory and design principles provide detailed information thal is basic to development work and includet reference to such unusual engines as thc Cross and Aspin rotary-valve units which were developed before the Second World War but may well make a comeback onc day. In general, however, the book is a down-to-earth assessment of air-cooling potential and practice that gives promisc that air-cooled units have a more importani future than currentapplications' appear tc indicate.
