Mr Thomas 0. Gunn, an East Lothian anty councillor and a JP, who operates a vate coal mine, had his one vehicle upended for two months last week at a ing of the Scottish LA in Edinburgh. Mr B. Birnie, the LA, said he had been her dismayed by the evidence in the case, -ticularly from a man who held a ponsible position.

Mr Gunn, of Prestonpans, admitted ving operated a vehicle in a serious ulition and having failed to keep pection records. His licence for three tides and a trailer was curtailed to one fide.

A vehicle examiner said that when he pected a lorry owned by Mr Gunn he found the steering faulty, defects in the side and tail lights, and the battery insecure. He advised Mr Gunn to keep inspection records, but when he visited Mr Gunn's premises five months later this had not been done.

Mr Gunn, who has been a member of the county council for 27 years and is also a member of the county police committee and accident prevention council, said he had overlooked the matter because of pressure of work. Although his vehicles were being examined by a garage at regular intervals he had no knowledge of any inspection records. Mr Gunn agreed to take over full responsibility for maintenance of his vehieles and keeping inspection records.
