• Officials from the West German commercial vehicle industry visited the headquarters of Manchester Transport Training Group at Failsworth, near Oldham. this week to see at first hand how British operators trained men for the hgv licence — and went away "extremely impressed".

Mr Jack Wood, chief training officer to the group which now has 68 transport companies in the Greater Manchester area under its wing, said the German visitc were astonished to hear that soon the gro will have successfully trained its 1000th h driver although it has only been in existen for three years. Some 80,000 training hot have been completed at a cost of only £1 hour. The pass rate achieved is said to well over 90 per cent and this al impressed the Germans. as did the grout training scheme for unemployed men al demobilized military men as hgv drivers.
