Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Hillman Machines Fully Engaged. Hillman Airways, Romford, gives the following figures of passengers carried for the week to July 21:—RomfordClacton line, 89 single journeys; Romford-Margate line, 40; Rumford-Paris line, 91. Figures for the previous week were, respectively, 81, 46 and 93. Owing to telephoning difficulties they were given wrongly in our issue for last week. In the past few days numerous charter flights have been made to Glasgow, Paris, Birmingham, Clacton and other places, and an office desk was flown to Cardiff for Roneo, Ltd.

Hull-Grimsby Service Going Strong. Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd., Hull, writes to tell us that the HullGrimsby service is going quite well and mentions that in the first week 108 seats were offered, of which 79 were taken, whilst 24 persons were refused owing to lack of accommodation. On one day, when the water ferry from Hull to Barton could not run owing to heavy ground mists, the air ferry made a safe crossing at 1,500 ft.

Brian Lewis's Growing Business. Business done by Brian Lewis and Co., Ltd., 30, Conduit Street, London, W.1, in the past few mouths is an indication of the trend of events in air transport. The De Havilland fleet of aircraft ordered by the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., was purchased through this company, as were the Do DaviHand Dragons and Fox Moths supplied to Midland and Scottish Air Ferries, Ltd., and all the machines of Hillman Airways. The original Monospar was supplied to Highland Airways, Ltd., for its Orkneys service, and the company has now ordered a Dragon for the same route. Portsmouth, Southsea and Isle of Wight Aviation, Ltd., has purchased two Fox Moths which are running on the south coast services, and another has been supplied to North Sea Aerial

and General Transport, Ltd., for the Hull-Grimsby line.

Blackpool and West Coast Air Services, Ltd., has purchased two Fox Moths and one Dragon for the Blackpool-Isle of Man service, and Airwork, Ltd., Barton Airport, Manchester, has bought A Fox Moth, whilst International Airlines, Ltd., the New Croydon Company, has now bought a Puss Moth. Sales have been made also to private operators. De Havilland machines seem to be strikingly popular. Brian Lewis and Co., Ltd., has sold more than 30 second-hand aeroplanes and over 40 new machines in the first six months of this year, and of these 50 per cent, were to commercial operators.

Important Southern Railway Development.

The Southern Railway has instructed Messrs. Nigel Norman, Alan Muntz and Graham Dawbarn to carry out an extensive survey of the English and Continental area served by the Southern Railway and to report on the various ways in which commercial aviation may affect the railway company's policy.

Airwork Overhauls: January-June.

Airwork, Ltd., Heston Airport, announces that during the first six months of 1933 it has carried out 38 renewals of certificates of air worthiness. Reduced Imperial Fares to Paris.

Fares on the midday London-Paris service of Imperial Airways, Ltd. (the "Silver Wing" service), have been re

duced to single, 19 30-day return, aril 18 15-day return, the reductions amounting to 108., 18s. and 16s. respectively.

I.O.W. Figures: Further Inereases.

Portsmouth, Southsea, Isle of Wight Aviation, Ltd., gives the following figures for passengers carried for the week to July 20:—Portsmouth-Hyde, 270 single journeys; 1.0.W.-Shoreham, 2; Poitsmouth-Shanklin, 27; RydeShanklin, 2; Portsmouth-Shoreham, 5 .

A Central Wales Development,

Universal Aircraft Services, Ltd., announces that from August 3 it will have at Llandrindod Wells aerodrome an Avro 504K two-passenger biplane and a Bristol one-passenger biplane, the rates for which will be 9d. per mile for each passenger on the Avro (or is. if only one passenger), and is. 3d. per mile for the Bristol. The Automobile Palace, Ltd., of Llandrindod Wells, of which Mr. Tom Norton is managing director, is interested in the enterprise.

British Engines for Spanish Airways. The Linens Aereas Postales Espanolas has ordered three Fokker 10-seater aeroplanes, each with three Armstrong Siddeley Serval 340 b.h.p. engines. In all 12 engines have been ordered. This equipment is for a new Seville-Canaries service.

Handbook on Acre Engines.

Volume 1 of a book called " Aero Engines; An Elementary Treatise," by Mr. J. D. Frier, has just been published at lOs. by Charles Griffin and Co., Ltd., 48, Drury Lane, London, W.C.2, and forms one of Griffin's aeronautical series. It deals technically with thermo-dynamic combustion, coaling and testing and is suitablyindexed.
