New Transporter debuts in UK

VOLKSWAGEN'S NEW Transporter range is now avalable in the UK, It features revised external styling and cab interior, but the most significant difference is a new Euro-5 family of 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engines with common-rail injection that replaces the former PD unit injector system.

Four ratings produce outputs of 84PS/ 220Nm, 102PS/250Nm, 140PS/340Nm and 180PS/400Nm, the latter courtesy of twin sequential turbochargers. The two lower ratings have a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, with six gears on the more powerful versions.

Certain 140PS and 180PS models also have the option of 4MOTION all-wheel drive, and, for the first time, WV's DSG twin-shaft automated manual, which has seven ratios. Two wheelbases, three roof heights and four GVVV ratings from 2,600kg to 3,200kg join a variety of body styles. Prices start at £16,450 (ex-VAT) on the road.

CM will publish a full test of the 180PS range-topper soon, but a preview drive of the more fleet-conscious versions reveals the new engine to be flexible and willing.
