• A graduate joining the transport industry is likely to earn more than his counterparts in engineering, banking, and construction — but less than those in oil and gas, computers, food, drink or the tobacco industry, according to a recent report by PA Personnel Services.
PA also compares the salaries paid to "adequate" and "above average" employees after five year's service. An adequate staff member in transport can expect 214,125, while above-average graduates should be on around £16,575.
After three years' service the differential is smaller (£12,416 against £13,500) and with only one year's experience, a graduate should not expect a five-figure salary — £9,286 for the adequate and £9,718 for the above-average.
The starting pay for graduates in transport in 1987 was £8,737, while the predicted figure for 1988 is 29,350.
