A scheme to create a network of drivers' restaurants offering discounts and conforming to "Continental standards" has been proposed by the Continental Freight Driver's Club.
Negotiations are proceeding with an as-yet unnamed motorway catering group, to provide special discounts for lorry drivers producing a freight drivers' club card.
At the same time, the secretary general of the CFDC, Richard Reed, has plans to produce a guide to transport cafes conforming to "Continental standards" of good food at reasonable prices.
These moves follow reports that Continental lorry drivers prefer not to use British transport cafes while in this country. According to the CFDC, many drivers will bring sandwiches over with them rather than eat here.
"English catering for the lorry driver is not highly thought of in Europe," Mr Reed remarked.
Negotiations with the motorway chain should have reached the "concrete stage" by early summer. If all goes well the CFDC hopes to have the discount scheme in operation by May or June.
