Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MEMBERSHIP of some Road Haulage Association branches is falling-off, with newcomers to the industry regarding membership as a luxury.

Devon and Cornwall secretary Brian Elliott told CM that his membership figures were down 10 per cent over the last 12 months, and that there was no sign of a let up.

Other area secretaries however, have reported that while their membership has dropped, it has not been out of keeping with the economic recession.

North Western (Eastern) area secretary Bill Farnorth commented: "We have had only four per cent of our members drop out," he said, "and that is remarkable."

In the West, area secretary Joe Cox said he has lost around four per cent of his members — between 50 and 60 over the past two years.

At RHA headquarters in London a spokesman admitted that there had been a drop in membership. "It is not an overall drop nationwide and we are not concerned about it, but there has been a drop in certain areas."
