Western Roadways (Cardiff) Ltd says it is considering moving its operations, involving the export of acetate yarn to the French Swiss border and the backloading of wine.

The company's transport manager Alan Levett told CM this week: "We have been told that we will get whatever we need in the way of permits if we move out there.

"Obviously we have been nto the move in depth, and we were told that if we moved to Cherbourg, which is classified is a depressed area, we will 3robably get other inducements as well," said Mr Levett.

Last year, Western Roadvays were granted only eight )ermits to run through ',ranee, and had another eight ransferred to them.

But for work other than .hat, the company has had to ihip trailers to France where they are picked up and taken :o their destination.

"What is really sickening is hat other companies get their illocations of permits, and hen don't use them," said Mr evett.

Department of Transport idvice was: "Be careful." 'I'd make very sure of getting mough permits before I noved," said a spokesman for he Dip.

"There are 35,000 British )ermits issued by the French, he same as there are French )ermits issued by us. We get a )lock of permits and we share hem out as fairly as possible.

"They go to hauliers with misting quotas and we try to nake sure that they don't get ewer than they had the prerious year."
