Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

have not carried this type of package before. I thought that it would be best to carry them longitudinally along the vehicle, but I am told that they should be loaded across the vehicle so that the rolling direction is from front to rear. This seems dangerous to me. What is the best method?

AThe best way to load drums or other cylindrical loads is dealt with in the Safety of Loads code of practice published by the DTp price 30p from HMSO.

Here it is recommended that such packages should be placed with their axis across the vehicle so that the rolling tendency is along the vehicle from front to rear. The use of chocks and lashings is recommended to secure them.

It is suggested that the bottom layer of drums should be loaded and then the first of the second layer placed on them at the front of the vehicle. The lashing should then be secured at the front of the vehicle and then laid over the drums already loaded, but the loose end of the lashing left free. The remaining drums should then be loaded and the lashing between the layers secured at the rear of the vehicle and the rope passed over the whole load and secured at the front.
