TWO Leicester operators, Liddingtons Transport Ltd, Barwell, and Ace Transport of Duns Lane, had their 0licences curtailed by the East Midland LA, C. M. Sheri-, dan, at Nottingham last week.

Liddingtons Transport appeared following complaints about its maintenance facilities by a vehicle examiner and a warning letter concerning a vehicle which failed to pass its annual test because of brake and steering defects.

Arthur Liddington, managing director, agreed that his premises had been littered with scrap vehicles and spare parts at the time of the examiner's visit, but said steps had been taken to clear this up. In addition, his son had returned to the business to help out and a vehicle pit was being installed. Warning that there must be continued improvement the LA reduced the licence authority from five vehicles and three trailers to three vehicles and one trailer.

Charles Hulbert, proprietor of Ace Transport, admitted convictions for a number of offences including defective brakes and a dangerous vehicle.

A vehicle examiner, F. Gardner, said he had issued two immediate and two delayed prohibitions against the firm's vehicles in July and September, 1976. The defects including loose shock absorbers, excessive engine oil leaks, defective brakes and a badly worn tyre. During one visit he found items ticked off on the inspection sheet which were found to be defective upon examination.

The LA said he had a report showing some improvement in the maintenance recently and so he did not propose to take severe action. But he added that the quality of the inspections must improve if Mr Hulbert wished to keep out of trouble. The licence authority would be reduced from four vehicles to three vehicles.
