• Fines totalling £85 were imposed on tanker driver by Preston magistrates whe he pleaded guilty to summonses connecte with driving excessive hours.

The driver, Mr J. K. Cross, Ribchester, was charged with driving moi than 124 hours in one working day on fot occasions, driving more than 10 hours three occasions and working more than hours without a break on two occasiol and knowingly making false entries on record sheet on four occasions.

Mr J. Lawton, prosecuting, said that tl offences showed that regulations, intende to protect the public from driver fatigu had been broken and further alleged that b keeping two sets of records Mr Cross ha attempted to conceal the fact that he ha been exceeding the stipulated hours.

Mr J. Backhouse, defending, said that N Cross had been a haulage contractor ar since an accident had not been working ft six months. He had since then decided to p into business again. With little financi backing Mr Cross was desperate for mom and thought he would be able to catch with the work he had lost by driving up the limit and over it on occasions.

Mr Cross was ordered to pay costs £10.
