Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WITH an average of two vehicles per unit, list R.5 of transport units, VT published on Wednesday, again caters almost exclusively for the small man. It comprises 788 vehicles, 50 trailers, 11 additional trailers and 21 additional vehicles in 374 Units. All have been offered before. Tenders are returnable by February 23.

Hull Makes First Profit for Years

FOR the first time in several years, Hull Transport Department will end the current financial year with a profit, estimated at £38,900. Higher fares and economies resulting in a saving of £22,000 will make the undertaking £96,000 better off than had been expected.

Estimated expenditure during 1955-56 is £900,125, an increase of £26,500. A city treasurer's representative forecasts that that year will end with a surplus of £10,000.

ELEVEN OPERATORS FINED

ELEVEN South Wales coach operators paid £68 in fines and £39 14s. 9d. in costs at Abergavenny last week for running coaches to Blackpool illuminations without road service licences,

• The chairman remarked: "The bench are prepared to admit there is a degree of confusion in the regulations, but before another batch of cases come before us I hope they will be clarified." The only units with premises are at Rochford, Essex (16 vehicles); Coventry (17); Stone, Worcs (28); Parkstone (44); St. Austell, Cornwall (12); Ely (20); Littleport, Cambs (5); Shipdham, Norfolk (12); and Southery, Norfolk (10). All the others are offered without premises.

Distribution by divisions •is as follows:—

South-eastern, 125 vehicles, 11 trailers, 3 additional vehicles. Scottish, 25 vehicles, 1 trailer, 1 additional trailer. North-western, 55 vehicles, 2 trailers. North-eastern, 92 vehicles, 4 trailers. Midland, 87 vehicles, 5 additional vehicles. South-western, 164 vehicles, 3 trailers, 6 additional vehicles. Western, 43 vehicles, 3 trailers, 1 additional vehicle. Eastern, 116 vehicles, 3 trailers, 3 additional trailers, 6 additional vehicles. Special Traffics, 79 vehicles, 23 trailers, 7 additional trailers.

Most of the vehicles are left over from list 8. The Special Traffics units include one at Southwark, London, engaged in meat haulage, and a substantial number equipped for heavy haulage. There is a fair sprinkling of maximum-load multi-wheelers.
