Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Truck drivers in Southampton face more parking nightmares with the loss of spaces in the docks, following the planned axing of a large parking area just outside the port.

A new swipe-card system to Improve security on one of the dockside berths involves shutting a nearby overnight parking area for some 60 HGVs. This follows a 500-haulier petition for a new park to replace Lorraine's in Anderson's Road which is scheduled for closure late this year (0114-20 Feb).

MGM Haulage owner Malcolm Millard says: "The area is now used for more container storage. Wherever you go secure parking is being shut and lay-by crimes on trucks are increasing,"

Southampton Container Terminals could not be contacted and the Association of British Ports declined to comment on the closure.

Publican Geoff Bailey, who drew up the Lorraine's truck park petition, says he has met and won over Tory MEP Roy Perry and the Labour MP for Southampton Test, Alan Whitehead. Bailey plans to hand his petition to the local authority on 20 March,

The Drivers' Action Movement is also backing the campaign. It has sent a survey of 37 councils to ministers and is finalising details of a forum with the Highways Agency. DAM secretary Jack Crossfield says: We need to see joint ventures involving government support, insurance companies, local businesses and councils."

The DAM survey reveals that more than 100 councils have no parking provision and only 27 plan to create any. According to the survey, overnight truck parking charges round the country range from £1.50 to £10.70.
