B by Miles BrIgnall load Haulage Association chief xecutive Roger King has joined he calls for the resignation of ransport Secretary Stephen ,yers amid doubts about the 'lability of the government's 0-year transport plan.

As the row over who said that rumbles on, serious uestions are being asked bout the effectiveness of yers' department, and bore recent setbacks leave he future of the governtent's private/public partership (PPP) policy.

Since taking office last ear Byers has presided over le collapse of Balltrack and ie partial privatisation of the ir traffic control systemoth of which have exposed aws in the PPP system.

King says: "This is what happens when you have someone who can't drive at the helm of the DoT and I suspect things are going to get worse before they get better. Thank goodness the two ministers beneath Byers are competent. You have to ask where the 10year plan is going when the [PPP] policy has run into so many problems less than a year into its duration."

Last week Byers was forced to hand over £30m to bail out National Air Traffic Services as the banks were no longer prepared to pick up the shortfall in its revenues following the fall in passenger numbers. Since then it has emerged that the DoT is looking at extending the PPP scheme to trunk road building projects.
