Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Appalling weather and main roads blocked by accidents didn't deter bidders determined to attend a recent sale held by Commercial Vehicle Auctions at its Doncaster site, says managing director Chris Wright.

Lots included three ex supermarket M-reg Scania 9113.320 4x2 daycab tractors which sold for between £6,700 and £7,400 apiece. "They fetched £1,500 more than the same trucks would have fetched last June," he adds.

Eight M-reg Daf 75.300 4x2 day-cab units didn't fare so well: they went for about £3,000 each.

Four 1-plated day-cab lveco 400E34 4x2 tractors sold for a modest £2,000 £2,300 apiece—Wright reckons they're destined for service overseas.

Among the more unusual offerings was a pair of J-reg nine-car Lohr drawbar car transporters with Volvo F17 prime movers. "They fetched £8,000 each, which I suspect is good money in today's climate," Wright remarks.

CVA is still holding Saturday sales at operators' premises, disposing of most or all of a firm's vehicles, but it didn't have to go very far for the most recent sale, which was held at its Doncaster base. "That's because the operator, HG McBain, is based in the north of Scotland, and we knew a lot of buyers wouldn't travel up there," says Wright.

The sale involved 42 trucks and trailers; star of the show was a Volvo FH12 460 Globetrotter 6x2 tractor 12001 on a Yplate) which went for £46,250. A Oaf 95XF 430 6x2 tractor (2000 on a Wplate) sold for £40,000. while a pair of Volvo FH12 420 Globetrotter 4x2s (1997 on an 11-plate) were bought for £17,100 and £17,800.

We had people coming in from as far afield as Cornwall and there was such a big crowd that it was a job to count the bids," says Wright, "All of the trucks were beautifully equipped. I haven't seen such a clean and tidy fleet for a long time."
