• A Cardiff public inquiry has warned Abergavennybased haulier Cyril Lane following a "spate of problems" with the condition of his vehicles. Lane, who holds a licence for 14 vehicles and 14 trailers, agreed that a series of prohibition notices had been imposed on his vehicles, but told South Wales LA John Mervyn Pugh that there had been no problems until his head fitter was taken ill.

Advice from the vehicle examiner had been taken on board, and he undertook to introduce a drivers' daily nil defect reporting system, and to write letters to his drivers in duplicate, pointing out their responsibilities.

All the vehicles had in-cab telephones, said Lane, and a service van was available. The vehicles were examined over the inspection pits every weekend, but inspection records had only been completed every six weeks. That period had now been reduced to four weeks, on advice from the LA.

Taking no action, other than to formally warn Lane, Mervyn Pugh directed that any application to renew the licence, which expires in June 1992, should be considered at a further public inquiry.
