Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

OPERATING the Magirus Deutz 232 16FS with tipping trailer, road tested last week, is likely to prove marginally more expensive than the average— but there is a compensation.

Using CM Tables for comparison, it is possible to compile tables for the average vehicle and the Magirus as shown. The result is an increase in operating costs for a vehicle operating 1,000 miles a week of about 1.65p a mile.

However, because the Magirus has an air-cooled engine, and thus no radiator or hoses to give problems, there is a possibility of slightly reduced maintenance though this has not been allowed for in the comparative tables.

Taking each cost factor in turn, the one ton extra unladen weight of the Magirus involves an extra road tax duty of £1 .20p a week based on the 45-week maximum annual use used in CM Tables. Wages, rent and rates and insurance have been assumed as common to both vehicles.

Interest on the capital cost of the Magirus shows an increase of just over £2 a week despite adjusting the figure given in CM Tables to provide for the two increments of 9 per cent imposed by the manufacturers since the Tables were compiled.

The standing cost total, therefore, shows an increase of £3.33 a week.

Turning to the running costs, the average vehicle in CM Tables was assumed to have a fuel consumption of 7 mpg and the Magirus returned 6 mpg on the road test. This represents an increase of nearly 1p a mile. Lubricants, tyre and maintenance costs have been assumed as typical for both and no adjustment is necessary here. Depreciation over an estimated vehicle life of 200,000 miles shows an increase of 0.38p a mile. The CM average vehicle price, adjusted as in the interest factor, is £14,751 and the Magirus price given for the test is £11,300 for the tractive unit with sleeper cab, and £4,200 for the tipping trailer, a total of £15,500.
