transport committee were told last week by Mr. John Rostron, general manager, that bus fares would have to he increased because of rising costs, which included wage increases.
Mr. Rostron said that last year the department's operating costs per mile were the lowest in the country, but they had now almost reached the limit in economic measures. The deficit at the end of the financial year would be about £10,500 and next year would be 00,000.
The introduction of the scheme he had suggested at a previous meeting, with 3d. tickets selling in books of 12 for 2s.. would yield £100,000 a year, said Mr. Rostron. The committee decided that he should prepare a report 'setting out the various ways fare increases could be introduced to meet the higher costs.
