AD1E-CAST light-alloy underframe pedestal, which has been introduced by the Northern Aluminium Co., Ltd., Banbury, is secured to the vehicle-frame members by a U-bolt and is bolted to the body underframe. A cast-in retaining groove is provided for the U-bolt close to the bearer mounting flange. The pedestal can be stressed only in compression and this, it is claimed, enables the properties of the casting to he employed to the best advantage.

Two tapered channel-shaped sections with reinforcing ribs support the bearer load and a triangular extension resists braking or acceleration forces, according to whether the pedestal is facing forwards or rearwards. It is recommended that most pedestals should be located facing forward to accommodate the more severe braking loads.

Use of these pedestals will, in a typical case, eliminate the need fillcomposite riveted support members and reduce costs.

A pedestal 7 in. high is immediately available, giving frame-to-floor heights of 10-12 in., and 5-in. and 9-in. pedestals will be offered shortly. The units are of Noral 117 alloy (B.S. 1490 LM4M), which is easily .cast and has favourable mechanical properties.
