The C.M.U.A. has directed the attention of the Minister of Transport to the fact that this year Whit-Sunday falls on May 31, and that unless provision be made otherwise it will be necessary to take out a Road Fund licence for the whole of the month of May in respect of vehicles not already licensed for that month, and which are to be used during May only on Whit-Sunday, 1936.

As the excursions and tours season normally commences on WhitSunday, the Association has urged that special provision be made in respect of the licensing of public service vehicles, so that the validity of licences for the month of June, 1936, may be extended to‘include May 31, or that short-period licences should be made available for the week ending on that, date,

Employers Not Responsible for Drivers' Offences.

,That, in many cases, it is unfair for the employer to be prosecuted 'for drivers' offences was a point raised in a recent address to the Birmingham branch of the Industrial Transport Association by Mr. J. Foley Egginton, area secretary of A.R.O.

Where a driver exceeded the speed limit, or drove for more than hours, in spite of definite instructions to the contrary, it seemed unreasonable to charge the employer with having caused or permitted the offence: . Yet the employer was invariably prosecuted and, in many cases, fined more heavily than the driver. The same point arose in cases of over-weight.

The speaker pointed out that, in the case of a chauffeur driving a private car and exceeding the speed limit, he was held to be solely responsible.

Strong Representation in Blackpool.

Many subjects of interest to passenger-vehicle operators came under review at the annual meeting of the Blackpool and District Motor Coach Owners Association, on Monday night.

'Mr. H. Hardman, secretary,. said that the most important matter dealt with during the year was the application of Lanes County Council to close many roads in the district to coaches. The committee was supporting the C.M.U.A. and other bodies in an effort to amend the council's application.

The Association had also been able to obtain a three-months' extension of last year's excursion and tour licences, without extra payment. Mr. Hardman reported 100-per-cent, membership of operators outside the combine companies. The Association decided to affiliate with A.R.O.

Mr. E. T. 'Butterworth was appointed president; Mr. S. E. Butterworth, president-elect; Mr. G. WoIstenholme, vice-president; Mr, H. Hardman, secretary; Mr. J. Jackson, treasurer; .Messrs. A. E. Newton, • A. .Leavesley, S. Meadows, U. Spencer, J. F. Elsworth, A: Roberts, E. Whittaker and Court. A. Whiteside, committee.
