Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Modification of the 4-ton Chassis with Geared Final Drive, Introduced in April, 1927, Gives a Chassis with a High Load Capacity.

FrIHE directors of the Albion Motor Car Co., Ltd., _L whilst fully recognizing the advantages of chain• drive, of which they were powerful exponents, began some little time ago to replace their series of chaindrive models with others having a geared final drive, and in April last they introduced the overtype 4-tonner having overhead worm gearing. This model was described In our issue dated April 26th, 1927, and has enjoyed considerable popularity—to such an extent, in fact, that the demand arose for a chassis of the same character which would deal with 5-ton loads.

In our issue for January 31st, 1928, the new Albion 5-ton overtype model was advertised for the first time. Being based entirely upon the 4-ton model, the features of the new 5-tonner, except in certain parts, do not differ from those of its prototype. The frame is, of course, of much deeper section in order to deal with the heavier loads that will be superimposed -upon it.

The engine employed for this model is the four-cylindered monobloc type, the heads being detached in pairs. It is rated at 34 b.h.p. by the R.A.C. formula, the cylinder bore being 4i ins, and the piston stroke 5i ins., and developing 43 b.h.p. at 1,000 r.p.rn. and 64 b.h.p. at 1,600 r.p.m. The high-tension magneto is driven through a Simms-Vernier coupling and is equipped with

s38 an impulse starter. The carburetter is a Solex supplied from an Autovac, the intake being jacket-heated from the exhaust gases. The Albion-Murray centrifugal-type governor is fitted to the engine.

The engine is carried on two special cross bearers, the one at the front having a central swivel and the rear bearer being secured to the frame at two points.

The drive is taken through a single-disc clutch, a four-speed gearbox and worm-driven rear axle, the gear ratios being the same as those employed for the 4-tonner. The turning circle of the vehicle is 48 ft. with an 11-ft. wheelbase.

The chassis can be equipped with either solid or pneumatic tyres. In the former case the equipment is 140 nem. for 850 mm. tyres on both the front and rear, the rear wheels having tivin tyres. The price of the chassis with this equipment is 1879. When pneumatic tyres are fitted the size of these is 36 ins. by 8 ins. all round, with twins on the rear wheels, the price then being 1969.

The chassis has been equipped with particularly powerful brakes, and it will be remembered that on the Albion overtype models the wheels and brake drums can be removed without involving disturbance of the hub bearings, so that refacing of the brakes becomes a very simple operation.
