Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Agricultural Motor Activity.

The " Gast" Motor-plough Co. in Berlin has increased its capital from .10,000 to 140,000 marks. Even now the capital is rather low for an undertaking of this character.

The " Bromm" Motor-plough.

As you will have inferred from my recent short notes on Berlin motor-plough firms, German farmers are manifesting an increasing interest in petrol-driven machines for tillage. The systems represented in Germany are : (a) the ploughing machine proper—for instance, the KOszegi—which serves exclusively for its described purpose, and is self-contained, and (b) agricultural tractors, to which ploughshares, harrows or any other implement for cutting or pulverizing the soil can be attached. I forward you a photograph of a " Bromm " motor-plough giving a demonstration on the Kurtzig estate, Posen_ As shown by the picture, for which I am indebted to the Markische Motorpflug-Fabrik (Mark Motor-plough Works), located at Berlin, the " Bromm " belongs to the second category, and impartial reports, which lie before me as I write, speak very favour

ably of its performances in shallow as well as deep or heavy ploughing. Of course, the share-sets have to be changed according to the nature of the work in hand. en the farm in question two five-furrow steel ploughs were hitched on in turn, weighing 10 cwt. and 36 cwt. respectively. The tractive energy is derived from a slow-running, four-cylinder motor developing 65 h.p. ; the gear provides for forward speeds of 5 and 10 kilom. (3.125 and 6.250 miles), and a reverse speed at the lower rate of travelling. The engine came from a well-known Berlin firm. All told, the tractor turns the scale at. 78 cwt. It can also be used for threshing. When deprived of its land-gripping devices, the machine may be used for road-transport work.

Six.-week Motor Show at Baku in 1912: Intending Exhibitors must Hurry Up 1 According to the " Standing Exhibition Commission for German Industry" (this body keeps German manufacturers well informed on exhibition projects, and may I inquire whether an analogous commission exists on your side of the Channel ?), the proposed Baku

Motor Show will eventuate definitely on 1st April, and last until the 25th May. An " English motor factory " has already booked space, which is good news, although I hope very shortly to hear that several British works had interested themselves in the show. Still, British makers have a little time yet in which to consider the advisability or non-advisability of exhibiting at Baku. The sections are four in number, embracing :— (1) Motors for agricultural and industrial purposes, house and factory installation, and for motor boats, railway and tramway work, cars, aviatic motors, transport vehicles, etc. (2) Motor parts and accessories. (3) Automobiles and accessories. (4) Literature, drawings, diagrams and so forth.

Would-be exhibitors must send in their application for space before the end of the year to the Baku Section of the Imperial Russian Technical Society (corner of 31illionja and Torgoja.wa), and exhibits reach Baku by 1st February. Floor space can be obtained at 25 roubles the square metre. Probably the British Consul at Baku (assuming there is one) would assist intending exhibitors.
