fine old cathedral city, a spot crammed with archaeological lore, a place one motors through and finds much of interest in the oldworld inns, the close, and the repose associated with cathedral towns. One does not expect stirring events to happen there. My direct mission was to see the principal of a motor-manufacturing concern, but on nay arrival at the address I found the factory had disappeared. Inquiries at a neighbouring business place brought the succinct information that the place had just been burnt to the ground ; the proprietor thereupon married his father's servant girl without a " By your leave! " or " With your leave," and was then in the throes

of the honeymoon. It will be readily grasped that as far as my mission was concerned there was "nothing doing."

It is said of Scotsmen that they only take single tickets when they come to England, and if they do return it is only to go and fetch a brother. However, I found one going back all right, one night last week, in the person of the head and forefront of Halley Industrial Motors Ltd. If I should be in illhumour I am always restored by a meeting with Mr. Geo. Halley. I

remember some lines of Wordsworth's, which must have been written years ago with Halley in mind—an obvious and curious case of 'intelligent anticipation." "A man he seems of cheerful yesterdays and confident to-morrows." He sleeps better in the train, he tells me, than in a hotel bed, so now he comes up from Glasgow through one night spends a day packed with appointments and returns at midnight. 1 found myself down at the Halley works at Yoker on the following day, and was greatly interested to see how well organized these works are ; oddly enough, have not been through them before. It was good to see the volume of work going through, and to hear that they were finishing up a remarkably good year.

Mr. Arthur Drummond, the managing director of Drummond Bros., Ltd., the well-known tool manufacturers, of Guildford, left London last week for a business tour to Australia. He is a most-interesting personality ; he comes from artistic stock and before starting the manufacture of lathes made a great reputation for himself as an artist, and, it will be remembered, he was responsible for the celebrated picture " His Majesty the Baby" amongst many others. He

seems to have left that behind him, and now controls one of the busiest tool manufactories in this country.

Some while ago I met a gentleman, in London, who was fresh back from a world tour, and who wanted an agency for a good commercial-vehicle for abroad. I happened to have gone through the works of a maker the day before, and it was plain that these two people ought to know each other ; gladly made the necessary introduction and the result has been quite gratifying. Now I come on the opposite description of case : I met, last week, in London, one of the principals of a large and sound manufacturing concern which is engaged solely in making commercial motors of practically all types, and they are desiring agents in the below-mentioned places abroad. They will require, and they in return will be prepared to give, the best credentials. I think this should interest many established firms abroad and doubtless many shipping firms acting at home. The places where agencies are desired are : Madras, Calcutta, Canada, Brazil, Ceylon and Straits Settlements. If letters are sent to me, care of this journal, and marked "Opportunity," I will see that they are forwarded to the proper quarter.
