Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ATWO-STOREY building with a floor area of 26,000 sq. ft. is being built at Chiswick by the London Transport Executive to house the central laboratory of their research department. There has been a chemical laboratory at Chiswick since 1921, when the works were first opened by the London General concern. Existing premises are scattered and inadequate for the amount of work that has to be done.

On the ground floor will be a laboratory for the mechanical testing of lubricants, the machine shop, engineering laboratory, cold chamber, radiography room. battery-lestine laboratories and others for the mechanical testing of metals. The upper floor will have groups of laboratories for testing fuels, lubricants. paints and textiles.

it is expected that the improved facilities for scientific workers and the range of modern equipment that will be provided will not only enable day-to-day functions to be performed more easily. but that quicker strides may be made with new discoveries. Long-term investigations include the determination of stress loading of equipment.

The building was designed to the requirements of Mr_ A. T. Wilford, 1..T.E. director of research.
