REPRESE.NTATIONS to the Northern Traffic Commissioners by Morpeth Rural District Council at Newcastle upon Tyne, last week, requested that United Automobile Services, Ltd., Darlington, should start their summer timetables on June 1, instead of during the third week of June. The request was made when the company applied to renew certain stage licences without modification.

Mr. D. S. Deacon, United's traffic manager, observed that the holidays were not in full swing in the Morpeth area until mid-July. If the company were to commence summer services on June 1, the additional mileage involved would be 12,680. They considered that the services up to the latter part of June were adequate.

Any additional traffic as a result of exceptional June weather could be catered for by duplication as required. Although this year June weather had been exceptionally good, overall figures did not show an increase of passengers.

For Morpeth, Mr. J. Stawart said this year there had been complaints about the late starting of summer schedules. People in rural districts were being crowded off buses by those travelling to die coast for daily outings.

Mr. Deacon said that if necessary his company would operate "one or two journeys in the first three weeks of next June, as an experiment.

Granting the renewals, the chairman, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, said the inter-urban express services, such as those which were to be introduced by Northern General (The Commercial Motor, August 14) might be the answer when local people were being crowded off Vises.
