of loss of milk traffic through uneconomic rates, the Northern Licensing Authority, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, at Kendal on Tuesday, asked for particulars of an auditor's special report and the names of hauliers now doing the work under contract A licence.
Mrs. Hodgson was seeking renewal of an A licence for 18 vehicles, Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw said that until September, 1957, eight of the vehicles had been solely engaged on milk collection for Libby, McNeil and Libby, Ltd., at Milnthorpe, for more than 20 years.
In 1956 there was difficulty over rates and Mrs. Hodgson complained that she was not getting a fair return. In December, a 5 per cent. increase was granted, but by September. 1957, not only was this rescinded, but a 5 per cent. reduction was made retrospective over the last four
months. Mrs. Hodgson took advice from her auditors, who told her that the business was not worth having. The work was now being done by various operators under contract A licence.
Mr. Hanlon pointed out that an arbitrary reduction in rates, without regard to costs, could be considered under the 1956 Act.
Mrs. Hodgson, in evidence, said that the vehicles concerned had found other work and she asked for an adjustment of normal user. After an objection by the British Transport Commission had been withdrawn. the application was granted.
