Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

This Speciality Embodies Unique Facilities for Adjustment. It Can, with Slight Alteration, be Used for Benzole.

It is not every day that one hears of the proprietor of a speciality who will make so confident an offer as that which is put forward bythe Favourite Carburetter, Ltd., 14, Caxton House, Westminster, SW. This concern, which is handling in this country the Berlin-made carburetter known as the Favourite, actually guarantees, after the fitting of one of its vaporizers, not less than a 25 per cent, increase of mileage beyond the results achieved by any other make of carburetter. In order that definite proof may be forthcoming of such possible improvement, the company will lend to any inquirer of standing one of its complete carburetters for a week's actual trial, So fair an offer as that actual guarantee of a 25 per cent. improvement is, as we have said, seldom encountered ; it is certainly a wonderful backing for any device.

An Excellent Showing.

We may, perhaps, here recall the fact that a Favourite carburetter was not long ago entered for an R.A.C. trial. We published the results of this remarkable test in a previous issue of this journal. In these trials, when the carburetter was fitted to a 2b-35 11.p. Benz car, runs were first of all made with benzole as the fuel, and finally with petrol. Eminently satisfactory results in respect of consumption were achieved,

We are, of course, more than ever alive to the necessity for careful consideration of any device which holds out promise of increased economy in respect of fuel consumption, especially at the present time, when the fuel question is an all-important one. We therefore consider that many of our readers should be informed as to the structural characteristics of this latest form of carburetter design. Our illustration, perhaps, will do more than any very considerable written description can effect ta inform our readers concerning the general arrangement and disposition of the parts. Strictly speaking, of course, the Favourite comes under the cato gory of two-jet carburetters. Its outstanding feature is undoubtedly the ingenuity which has been expended in order to secure careful and proportionate supply of air under all conditions of fuel flow. No claim is made that such a result can be achieved with the maximum simplicity of construction, but the designer's ingenuity has been expended upon securing the utmost ability to adjust and calibrate with the least possible complication.

Adjustable Air and Petrol.

The main central jet, of which the orifice is adjustable, is carried in the lower part of the carburetter chamber, in the upper portion of which the special. butterfly throttle valve is supported. As in several other types of carburetters, a secondary or pilot fuels supply pipe--we prefer to avoid the possible conftrsion which might arise from calling it a jet—is used to convey a small quantity of petrol to an orifice in the neighbourhood of this valve seating, this auxiliary supply being intended for the initial stages of the opening of the throttle. By a peculiar construction of the spindle carrying the throttle valve, the first supply of air which the engine can absorb is drawn endwise through the valve spindle, finding its way out through specially-drilled holes on the top of the butterfly itself. Adjustment of this air supply is facilitated by means of the special knurled valve nut, by rotation of which the alteration of the small Frooves for the passage of the air advances or retards its supply. The actual amount of the petrol supply available through this auxiliary pipe can be varied by an adjustable telescopic joint which is provided. The next important special feature of this Favourite carburetter is the embodiment of an easily-adjusted screw needle-valve, by which the main supply of petrol from the float-chamber may be regulated to a nicety. This controls the entry of the fuel into the small circular jet chamber proper, from which the liquid is sucked out by the air rushing past the spray holes along the annular chamber formed between the central fuel column and the-ehoke ring... The ordinary air supply enters the carburetter through a gauze-surrounded easing situated at the bottom of the carburetter. Further air supply, however, is provided by a light spring-loaded valve, which is cam depressed in an ingenious manner in conjunction with the partial rotary motion of the butterfly valve. The relative motions of the throttle and this auxiliary air valve are easily and quickly adjustable.

An Atomizing Fan.

There is little more to add in respect of the design of this interesting carburetter, but we perhaps may specifically mention the mounting of the little atomizing fan over and above the jet tube. This is designed to catch any vapour condensed by chance from the main walls of the carburetter and finally to atomize it. An interesting feature of the float chamber design is the provision of a small aluminium casting, which is let into the top of the reservoir, and which acts as a combined bracket for the float weights and as a guide for the spindle.

There is little doubt in our mind that a number of users of petrol-engined commercial vehicles will he interested to hear of the Favourite Co.'s "sporting offer." Moreover, from our knowledge of its performances already under the specially difficult conditions of industrial service, we feel certain it will, to adopt a Yankeeism, "make good."
