[21941 (Bexley Heath).—You state that the driver of one of your vans, on returning from the last C.M.U.A. Parade, was so proud of his awards that he suspended the cards in such a way that the back numbgr-plate was at times hidden. H your man explains that it was an inadvertent happening, and that his back number-plate was not obscured all the time, he would most probably get off on payment of costs, which should be purely nominal.

C16 Checking Axle-weights on Commercial Motors.

[2193] (Walsall).—You are required, under the Heavy Motor Car Order, to paint the registered tare. and the registered axle weight of each axle (this. being the maximum weight that you think the axle is at any time likely to have upon it), and the highest rate of speed at which the vehicle may be driven, on the right or off-side of the vehicle in letters and figures not less than one inch in height, and of such colour as to be clearly legible and distinguishable from the colour of the ground whereon the letters and figures are painted.

Who Is Liable for Damage to a Private Lamp?

[2196] (Hooke).—In our opinion you are not liable for the damage to the lamp in question. Had it been one erected by the local authority, the position would have been different.. You are concerned with a private lamp projecting over the public highway, and the ease is governed by one which occurred in the High Court of London, to which you can obtain reference later if the parties who are claiming on you take any action. It might be a good plan on your part if you lodged a claim for any damage that may have been done to your vehicle or to its load.

What Should I Charge Per Mile for Carrying Five Cwt. of Goods ?

[2197] (Metcalf).—We should say you are overload

ing a 10-12 h.p. chassis by carrying so much as 15 cwt. upon it. A machine of this kind is designed to carry an ordinary pleasure car body and four or five people. A sufficient load would be between 5 and 7 cwt. To run a vehicle of the kind 70 miles would certainly cost you, exclusive of anything for the driver, net much below 4d. per mile run, and it therefore would not pay you to charge only 6d. per mile for the journey, unless you mean to charge it both' ways. It would just pay you to charge 8d. per mile, for the 70 miles.

Where is a Good Town in Which a Man Can Become a Successful Taxicab Owner-driver?

[2198] (T.axibus).—Of the towns you mention, possibly the best chance would be presented by Portsmouth. A four-cylinder Unic cab from Mann and Overtons, Ltd., 10, Lower Grosvenor Place, London, S.W., a 15 h.p. Napier from Napier Motors, Ltd., 14,. New Burlington Street, London, W., or a four-cylinder Renault from Robert Bell, Ltd., 45, Horseferry Road, London, KW., would suit you admirably. The Unio and the Renault can be bought on the hire-purchase system. You should also write to the Belsize and Bayard people. You will probably save money by garaging and cleaning the car yourself, but you should be able to judge better after getting terms quoted locally. The C.M.U.A. is undoubtedly a good association to join.

The Vexed Question of Benzole v. Petrol.

[2199] (Du I'ont).—All motorbuses, motorcabs and commercial goods vehicles are entitled to a rebate of

of the ad. per gallon petrol duty. Doctors get the same rebate. A7 there is no tax on benzole, and as spirit is sold to commercial-vehicle owners on better terms than to private car owners, there is very little inducement at present to use benzole in the case of commercial-vehicle owners, and not as much in the case of doctors as in the case of other private owners. The L.G.O.C. is using about 13i. million gallons of motor spirit a year at the moment. It is interesting to note that at certain large depots the company is successfully running its machines with an admixture of paraffin and petrol. The total consumption of petrol in the United Kingdom promises to be in excess of 100 million gallons this year.
