CHESHIRE-BASED haulage firm Road & Sea Express faces an uncertain future after a winding up petition was issued in the courts.

Until recently the firm ran two depots for pallet network Pall-Ex, handling deliveries into the Irish Republic and North London. According to a former employee its Buckinghamshire depot has now been taken over by Northern Irish haulage giant Montgomery Transport, but Montgomery Transport declines to comment. Pall-Ex says Road& Sea Express was asked to leave the network on 24 March when the state of its finances became apparent.

The winding up order was issued by factoring firm Skipton Business Finance. There will be a hearing at Manchester District Registry on 23 May to decide if the company should be liquidated.

One former driver says: "We were told last week that all the depots were to close apart from one, which has now been taken over by Montgomery Transport. Between 50 and 100 drivers were made redundant."

Hilary Devey, MD of Pall-Ex, says: "Pall-Ex's thorough checking procedures highlighted that Road and Sea Express were encountering financial difficulties. They were subsequently invited to leave PallEx's depot network."
