Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

REGARDING YOUR letter headed "Tight means trouble" (CM 24 March),! am a fitter/ driver of 40 years' experience and I must admit wheels coming loose on trucks is every transport manager's and driver's worry.

In my experience there are three reasons why a wheel comes loose: One: Heat being transmitted from the hub and the drum to the stud, causing expansion.

Two: Two wheels together on the same axle on the same side where the tyres are not equally worn — this transmits strain onto the studs and nuts.

Three: Putting oil and grease on the studs. Let us not forget, if it goes on easily it will also come off easily. Oil or grease will simply help to stretch the thread at the final torquing up.

As an owner or manager you have to do your utmost to take care of your staff under health and safety regulations. Let us not forget you cannot allow your driver to keep jumping on a wheel brace.

And if you happen to employ agency drivers you have to be doubly sure of this.
