Police are making headway on truck crime — but the number of hijackings continues to rise. Jennifer Ball reports.

OVERALL TRUCK crime figures have fallen 10% over the last year however, there has been an increase in hijackings.

TruckPol, the Metropolitan Police road freight crime unit, has received 702 reports of truck crime during the past three months, compared with 781 in the same period last year. However, while vehicle thefts fell from 393 to 302,13 drivers were hijacked — up from seven in the same period last year.

DS Mark Hooper from TruckPol says the fall is due to an increase in police activity. There have been a number of arrests recently, including several in South Yorkshire where a gang of alleged truck thieves was detained, as well as successful operations by spe cialist truck crime units Operation Grafton and Operation Indicate.

Hooper adds:"However, we are concerned about the increase in hijacks and will continue to focus on this.

"On a more positive note the spate of 'round-the-corner' crimes in North London appears to have stopped due to operators taking our advice and being more proactive in checking information if they are suspicious about a change in delivery details.

"The relationship between the police and the haulage industry has definitely improved and operators are giving us more information which we can act upon. We hope that this spirit of co-operation will continue."
