Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• County standards officers at Hampshire are investigating an Irish livestock haulier "with a view to prosecute" after examining 300 sheep.

The truck was stopped at Poole on 22 March as the driver was trying to leave the port for Birmingham, where the sheep were to be slaughtered.

The animals were unloaded at an approved resting place near Southampton. One was found dead and three were so ill they were destroyed. After another inspection at least another 26 sheep were consid ered too unfit to continue their journey and were destroyed. Trading standards officers are awaiting for the results of post mortems before continuing their investigations into the company and the driver.

A Hampshire spokesman says: "It is very unusual to find things this bad and it has obviously given us great cause for concern".

The issue was raised in Parliament last week when the Agriculture Minister Nicholas Soames made a statement on the consignment.
