• In a bid to make "temp" work more attractive to HGV drivers, Leicester-based employment agency HMS has introduced a system of vouchers for hours worked; they can be exchanged for goods ranging from tool kits to televisions.
Lynne Phillips of HMS says: "We believe that this scheme is more popular than, say, sick pay — drivers do not generally temp long enough to qualify for such benefits."
Phillips agrees that there is a stigma associated to temp driving. It is unpopular, she says, because of its low industry status. She could not say how much temp drivers are paid.
