• Lorry drivers faced crossing angry picket lines at Dover this week for the first time, as hundreds of striking seamen tried to stop P&O sailing ferries crewed with volunteers.
The escalation came as the company recruited new crews to replace 800 sacked seamen and prepared to bring two vessels from their berth in Rotter dam. Strikers vowed to step up the dispute by asking truck drivers and other motorists not to enter the docks.
The Transport and General Workers' Union says it always tells members to respect official pickets, although most drivers using Dover are owneroperators or Continentals, and not TGWU members.
