In a speech to 1,100 members and guests at this week's annual Freight Transport Association dinner, president Stuart Phillips said: "If London is allowed to impose its own vehicle Construction & Use regulations, the floodgates would be open for local government throughout Europe to follow suit. Operators could face the nightmare of hush-kits in London, extra headlights in Birmingham, front under-run bumpers in Manchester, air suspension in Frankfurt and so on." Phillips told an enthusiastic audience: "We must defend with all our resources the fundamental principle that vehicles which are constructed to Type Approval standards and operated in accordance with UK C&U regulations are entitled to use the roads of this country except where access is restricted by size, weight or time."
