Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

help operators work more efficiently: it used IT systems to help Marshalls reduce journeys and improve fuel efficiency.

Who:

Marshalls

Fleet:

103 Vehicles

Business:

Marshalls provides natural stone and hard landscaping products. It operates its own network of quarries, manufacturing sites and 12 distribution centres, providing specialist supplies to the construction, home improvements and landscaping sectors.

Objective:

A business review identified changes that could be made to Marshalls' logistics operation. These have improved vehicle utilisation, fuel efficiency and customer service, and better ways of measuring the fleet's performance.

Results:

By using larger vehicles with a 22.7% increase in payload and introducing REACH real-time software (from MJC2) the company now makes more than 4,000 fewer journeys a year, saving it 338,000 miles and 192,164Iit of fuel, and cutting CO2 emissions by a total of 515 tonnes.

Vehicle utilisation on return trips has increased from nil to 30%, by centralising route planning and encouraging better communication between depots. More fuel consumption data and other key performance information has been made available through an improved fuel management programme, including updated fuelling facilities and a new fuel management control system. The changes have also benefited customer service levels with 98% of deliveries now made on time compared with the previous figure of 93%.
