The new regulations, which came into effect on August 1, amend the Goods Vehicles (Plating and Testing) Regulations 1982. They bring forward from 1940 the minimum age of vehicles over 1,525kg unladen weight to which the regulations apply.

According to Peter Bottomley, Minister for Roads and Traffic, "The change in the date requirement will reduce the cost of preserving goods vehicles that have come to the end of their working life and enable enthusiasts to display these historic vehicles more easily at rallies and exhibitions."
