Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

■ Perkins Engines (Shrewsbury) has developed three new, high-torque variants of its 12.17 litre inline six cylinder Eagle engine.

The 2651, 3001', and 350Ti engines have the same maximum power ratings as the current 265 Li, 300Li and 340Li engines, which will continue in production for the time being, but torque has been boosted and fuel consumption improved, mainly as a result of reworked cylinder heads and better breathing.

The new engines, designated the 800 Series, will gradually replace Li Eagles in Leyland rigid eight wheeler and tractive unit models, but not yet in Fodens, Seddon Atkinsons or ERFs.

Leyland is by far the biggest single customer for the Shrewsbury-built engines, currently taking about 1,000 a year, about half the total produced for automotive applications.

The new Eagles have lower specific fuel consumption, higher peak torque and higher torque rise — the difference between peak torque and torque at maximum power than Li equivalents.
