Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DOMESTIC demand for UK commercial vehicles in the short term seems to be holding up well, However, over the longer-term growth in UK sales is likely to be modest. This is stated in a report, The Motor Industry 1974-77, published by consultants Phillips and Drew.

During 1973 the report shows that while light vans enjoyed buoyant demand over the year, demand for light trucks remained very weak possibly "reflecting sustained 'trading up' to larger vehicles", as well as shortages of engines after the long strike at Perkins Diesel.

Export prospects seem to be significantly better than for cars. The best prospects are in the enlarged EEC where the most obvious target for UK manufacturers will be the

medium-truck market. Although there is a considerable price advantage for UK makers of medium trucks this is not so for the heavy 'end of the market — partly, says the report, because of their relative lack of experience in producing trucks heavier than 32 tons gvw.
