NEW basic rates for British Road Services maintenance staff have now been agreed and arc effective from August 19 last. This is revealed by the T.G.W.U., which records that weekly rates for skilled fitters rise by 12s. 6d., for semi-skilled (1) by I Is. 6d.. semiskilled (2) by Its. 6d. and for unskilled by I Is. The net increase is less than these amounts, as the interim bonus of 3s. 6d. a week has been cancelled. Intermediate shifts outside normal day-shift hours will now be paid at a rate of time • and a third, with a two-hour minimum per shift.

Also announced is that. under the N.A.A.F.I. transport agreement, adult male rates have been increased by 10s. per week in London and 9s. in the provinces; the increases are effective from August 12 last.

More Casualties I N the first seven months of this year 3,505 goods vehicle drivers and passengers were killed or seriously injured— an increase of 15 per cent over the corresponding months of 1962, although mileage was up by only 21 per cent. Fatalities over the same period rose by no less than 25 per cent.
