Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Daf XF105 was a star of last week's truck show in Amsterdam. Here are the basics...

The Daf XF105 has a tough act to follow. lbe outgoing model,XF95, built a formidable reputation for itself in the long-haul tractor sector, finding itself at the top of the market's and most drivers' rankings. But with recent new launches from Scania, Renault,Volvo and Mercedes at this end of the market, not to mention revamps on the way from Iveco and MAN, the XF105 will need to be something special to ensure it stays ahead of the game.

On paper things look promising. At the heart of the XF105 lies Dais new 12.9-litre engine. Dal took the wraps off this motor at Hanover last year and this is its first truck application. Initial power offerings will be 410, 460 and 510hp. with a 560hp version on the way later,Thrque output from the engine is 2000,2300 and 2500Nm respectively.

To meet Euro-4 and 5 emissions limits the truck is equipped with SCR technology, and to make way for the AdBlue tanks and enlarged silencer this requires, the air tanks and other chassis-mounted componentry have been moved to the inside of the chassis. As with the previous model, the XF105 is fitted with electronically-controlled disc brakes. Systems such as ABS,ASR, vehicle stability control and brake assist are also available.

By its own admission, Dafs changes to the exterior have been evolutionary, rather than marking a revolution in vehicle design, and are limited to a new grille and bumper on all models and a new roof on the Space and SuperSpace cab versions.

Although the basic design of the cab fascia remains the same, the interior changes are more extensive.Thev consist of a new steering wheel, now housing the cruise control dashmounted handbrake and a reduced height engine tunnel, down to just I 5cm. XFs equipped with ZFsASTronie auto box will have column-mounted gearshift controls, while manual versions have a retractable gearstick ensuring improved cab access.

With limited interest in Euro-4 compliant vehicles in the UK ahead of the October 2006 deadline Daf isn't expecting huge orders for the XF105 over here, particularly as it will he considerably more expensive than its predecessor and 6x2 versions will inevitably be slow to appear. As a result it will continue to sell the XF95 well into next year. •
