and Northern Ireland, does not replace the LGV licence, but the scope of the licence is so wide that if an individual wants to work as a professional truck driver then they will need one. There are a few exemptions from the legislation, including the armed forces and one or two other undefined groups where truck driving is an incidental part of the job.

It's subject to confirmation, but it would seem likely that fitters won't need a Driver CPC, provided they're not the only person who takes the vehicles to the test centre and/or don't have to help out taking a load when necessary.

The police and VOSA will be responsible for enforcing the Driver CPC. Drivers pulled over and found to be without a CPC after September 2009 will be prosecuted for a similar offence to driving without a licence.

While gaining a Driver CPC will be a bit trickier than previously, as CM stated on 13 October, the new regulations also lower the age limit for truck drivers from the current 21 to 18. This could represent a major breakthrough for the industry as it seeks to recruit new drivers.
