Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

kFOUR-WHEELED 5-6-cu.-yd. dumper, with a supercharged four-cylindered two-stroke oil engine and the steering gear, axles, gear:X and and clutch normally supplied in a six-wheeled avy-duty model, has been added to the Foden age. Normally the body is made to carry a ick measure of 5 cu. yd., or for heaped capacity 6 cu. yd., and has a normal width of 7 ft. 11 in.

✓ off-the-road operation, but a special body ft. 6 in. wide is available for normal highway nhing.

Features of the vehicle include a frame 12 in. ep, brakes on the rear axle only for off-the-road rrk, a 12-speed gearbox and a half-cab. Single -es are fitted to all wheels, those at the front ing 11.00-20 in., whilst the rear covers are .00-20 in. The dumper weighs 6 tons 1 cwt.,

The Foden FD.4 engine developing b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m. is installed with e four-speed -main and three-speed icyclic gearbox attached as a unit. ils is supported in the frame through ree-point rubber-bush suspension. A fin.-diarneter single-dry-plate clutch fitted.

An oil cooler is provided and the diator has a large block element with tachable tubes. This entire unit is xibly mounted on the front cross2..mber and provision is made for easy moval of the grille, radiator and front 3ss-member for the engine and gearx to be withdrawn through the front r servicing.

A large-capacity oil-bath air cleaner fitted above the bumper bar on the ar side to ensure a clean, cold supply air for combustion. The half-cab akes for greater accessibility to the jection pump and other auxiliaries on e near side and improves visibility, ush guards are fitted in front of the diator and head lamps, and a metal ield Protects the crankcase base.

A single Hardy Spicer propeller shaft tics the gearbox to the overhead-worm

drive of the axle, which has 8Fin, driving centres and 2-in.-diameter halfshafts. The standard axle ratio is 8.33 to I, which, with the gear speed, affords a speed range of 1.7 m.p.h. to 45 m.p,h,..at governed engine speed.

Foden two-leading-shoe brakes, with hydraulic assistance, are fitted to the rear axle only, but if the dumper is required to operate at high speed on normal roads, the brake gear can be fitted also to the front axle. The rear drums are 161 in, in internal diameter with 7-in.-wide shoes Foden recirculatory-ball steering gear is used and the front axle is of heavyduty pattern with 21-in.-diameter stubs. The frame has four heavy pressed-steel bolted cross-members. The wheelbase is 8 ft. 3 in. and the overall length is 14 ft, 7/ in. over the chassis. The body extends 1 ft. 3 in beyond The rear of the frame. The front track is 6 ft. 21 in. and. the rear track 5 ft. 9* in. and the width over the front hubs is 7 ft. 6 in. • The standard body, weighing 1 ton 11 cwt., has a 5/16-in.-thick steel floor and the sides are made from /-in, plate with welded channel-section reinforcement. An extension at the front shields. the cab and engine. The main section of the body is 6 fe. II / in. wide, 7 ft.• 8/ in. long and 2 ft. 91 in deep inside.

It is hinged at the rear and the two tipping-gear cylinders are mounted on cradles outside the frame, which is 3 ft: 2 in. wide. The tipping-gear pump is ofthe same capacity as that used on the Foden six-wheeled dumper, and can raise the •body to 60' in 12 sec. An automatic release gear operates when the maximum angle is reached, thus preventing over-tipping.

The half-cab gives maximum visibility and, having straight pillars, is easy to maintain. A cycle-type wing is fitted on the near side, so that a fitter can stand between the wheel and frame on ground level to attend to the engine. As an alternative, the standard full-fronted cab can be fitted to accommodate a mate.
